Use this article to apply formatting and transformation functions to your CSV data before import, and to correct individual values directly in the Preview using inline editing.
In the Magical Import module's Data Preparation section, you can optionally clean, format, and transform CSV data before it's imported. Any changes you apply here are reflected only in the Preview, not directly in your CRM, until the import runs.
Applying Functions to Clean and Transform CSV Data
Once you've selected your CSV and mapped your fields, the Magical Import module's Data Preparation section lets you clean, format, and transform CSV data before it's imported.
- In the Magical Import module, click the Data Preparation heading to expand it.
- Under Column Name, select fields from your CSV to apply formatting and standardization functions to.
- In the Function dropdown, select an option to clean up, format, add or remove text, copy values to other fields, or make bulk changes to the data before importing. These are the same functions found in the Transform Data module — see its Function Catalog for the full list of available functions.
- As you add functions, click Apply after each one to see the change reflected in the Preview.
Note: If you've set up formatting or standardization functions but the changes aren't reflected after importing, confirm that you clicked Apply for each function. Functions must be applied to the CSV data in the Preview before the import runs—they aren't applied automatically.
The image above shows the Data Preparation section of the Magical Import module, labeled with a blue numbered badge showing "4" indicating the number of columns being modified. Four Column Name and Function pairs are configured: First Name set to "Format: Proper case person," Last Name set to "Format: Proper case person," Phone Number set to a chain of three functions — "Prefix: Remove" with parameter "0," "Remove: Non-digits," and "Prefix: Add" with parameter "+61" — and Country/Region set to "Standardize: Country Name to Code3." An "Add Field" button and a yellow "Apply" button appear below the configured fields.
Editing CSV Data on the Fly
In the Magical Import module's Data Preparation section, you can edit CSV data on the fly by correcting or updating individual values directly in the Preview, without modifying your original CSV file.
- Hover over a value in the Preview table. A pencil icon appears to the right of the value.
-
Click the pencil icon to open the Edit popup.
The image above shows the Preview panel in the Magical Import module, with the Filter set to "Show All Rows." The CSV Column header row displays Email, First Name, Last Name, and Company (partially visible). An arrow points to a pencil icon that appears next to a Last Name value, indicating the inline edit control that appears on hover.
-
Type the updated value and click Save. To remove the value entirely, click Clear. To discard your change, click Cancel.
The image above shows the Edit popup open in the Preview panel of the Magical Import module, positioned over a Last Name value reading "Monaghan" in an editable text field. Below the field, you can choose from three options: Cancel, Clear, and Save.
The updated value is used when Insycle runs the import — the value in your original CSV file is not changed.
