Salesforce's Contacts to Multiple Accounts feature allows a single Contact to be linked to more than one Account through indirect relationships, in addition to its one primary Account. This is common for organizations that need to track a Contact's involvement across several business units, deal teams, or related companies.
When this feature is enabled, merging duplicate Contacts or Accounts in Salesforce becomes more complex. Salesforce blocks a merge outright if the records involved share an overlapping indirect relationship, since combining them would otherwise create a duplicate link. Insycle's Merge Duplicates module for Salesforce automatically detects and resolves these overlaps, so merges complete successfully without manual cleanup beforehand.
This article covers how Insycle handles that resolution for both Contact merges and Account merges.
Merging Contacts with Contacts to Multiple Accounts Enabled
When two duplicate Contacts are both indirectly related to the same Account through the Contacts to Multiple Accounts feature, Salesforce blocks the merge with the following error:
"Can't merge contacts. These contacts have the same related account. Remove the redundant account-contact relationships and then try merging again."
Insycle's Merge Duplicates module for Salesforce resolves this automatically. During the merge, Insycle identifies the overlapping indirect Account relationship shared between the duplicate Contacts and removes the redundant Account Contact Relationship (AccountContactRelation) record from the Contact being merged away, while preserving the relationship on the master Contact. Both primary (direct) and secondary (indirect) Account relationships are reassigned to the master Contact, so no relationship data is lost.
This means the merge completes without the person needing to manually locate and delete conflicting Account Contact Relationship records in Salesforce beforehand.
