Running a Second Deduplication Pass That Targets Different Matching Criteria

When using multiple deduplication templates in the Merge Duplicates module, each template is typically designed around different matching criteria — targeting duplicates that a previous template wasn't configured to catch. For example, a first template might match contacts on identical email addresses. A follow-up template might then target contacts who share the same name and phone number but have different email addresses — a population the first template wouldn't have caught.

The Values Don't Match condition in Step 1 of the Merge Duplicates module makes this precise targeting possible. When applied to a field, it requires that all records in a duplicate group have a value in that field, but that those values differ across records. This allows you to deliberately scope a template to groups where a specific field differs — rather than matches — across records.

Configuring the Values Don't Match Condition for a Follow-Up Template

To configure this condition:

  1. Navigate to Data Management > Merge Duplicates and select your database and object type.
  2. In Step 1, on the Simple tab, configure your matching fields for the current template. Include the field that served as the primary matching criterion in your previous template — in this example, Email.
  3. Click the Conditions tab.
  4. For the Email field, set the Condition to Values Don't Match.

The image above shows the Conditions tab in Step 1 of the Merge Duplicates module, with the Email field set to the Values Don't Match condition, along with additional matching fields configured for the follow-up template.

With this condition in place, Insycle will only surface duplicate groups where the email addresses differ across all records in the group. Groups where all records share the same email address — the population your first template was designed to catch — will not appear in this template's results.

Note: The Values Don't Match condition requires that all records in a group have a value in the specified field. Groups where any record has an empty value in that field will not qualify and will be excluded from the results.
